Beyond the Breath: Extrordinary Mindfulness through Whole Body Vipassana Meditation, by Marshall Glickman

From Publishers Weekly

Glickman is nothing if not practical, as his credentials suggest. The editor and publisher of Green Living, an environmental journal, and author of The Mindful Money Guide argues that sensation-based vipassana meditation as taught by revered Indian master S.N. Goenka is the most effective meditation method. Twenty years of meditation appear to have brought Glickman useful clarity: his meditation instructions will help beginners, his unpacking of the idea of Buddhist detachment is insightful and his correlation of new brain research results with ancient Buddhist wisdom is fresh and persuasive. When he moves beyond meditation and the insights of the four noble truths about reality, however, he overreaches. He discusses ethics, karma, nirvana as a nod to the whole complex way of seeing and being that Buddhism offers, yet here seems to be much more un-Buddhistically theoretical. His connections can be hard to grasp: Darwin's consonance with Buddhism is an intriguing idea that is under-explained, and the topic of addiction to pleasure is similarly underdeveloped. The biggest disappointment in the book, though, is the editing. Someone should have corrected the misspelling of Henepola Gunaratana's name in the bibliography as well as a dozen other distracting mistakes in text ("snacked very discretely," "severals times," "compliment and reinforce"). The book's strength is Glickman's nitty-gritty appreciation of the somatic experience of reality. The Buddha knew that suffering hurt. Glickman does well to emphasize the "mindbody" as the vehicle we humans have to drive to nirvana. Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I went to a Vipassana ( Goenka) retreat 3 years ago but the 4th day my husband and I gave up! To hard for our health! My husband is 68 and I am 57 years. I am very thin and have some back problems . I really think the retreats are designed for very healthy people . Food is scarce , many hours sitting with your back straight....I was very sad not to have the possibility of learning the complete Vipassana meditation method. I haver read the few books I could find about Vipassana (compared with many many books about other types of meditation ), but none of them explained what is most important and only taught in the (Goenka) Vipassana retreats: complete, clear and detailed instructions. Finally I found this wonderful book and I really thank Mr Glickman for giving my husband and me and hope many other people too the opportunity to learn deeply the Vipassana meditation specially when going to a retreat is not possible. The book is also rich in explanations on how to work with the difficulties of human mind in a very didactic way.I hope this book could have a bigger display and can be obtained as a kindle book too so that many people can know about it and buy it. I searched before in amazon and could not find it before.

If you have attended recently a 10 course day retreat, well there's nothing superior to that, however the reminder of the book about the instructions on how to practice properly it's totally worth, there's a little Faq section that personally I didn't find useful as the topic is well described and covered in the technique section. I was expecting to read much more problems and solutions to common situation that mediators face and maybe in one of them yours. The technique is repeated in a gentle way that is not annoying to read and helps to keep the concepts because we tend to derail easily once we are practicing. It's also worth to mention that basics about the philosophy scaffolding is beautifully written and it's inspiring with efforts to make it unbiased and in a realistic way. All in all great reference to refresh concepts and increase the knowledge/understanding about the nature of what you're doing while meditating

Wow. I have read many books on Buddhism and meditation and this one is one of the best I've read.Maybe it was a case of "If the student is ready, the teacher will appear" type of thing, but the beautiful and thorough writing explains the concepts of meditation in a scientific and illustrative way. I have struggled with the concept of Karma for a long time and this book gave me an "Ah ha" moment. The author recommends further reading on this subject. I wouldn't recommend this book for an introduction into meditation. This book gave me real insight into my practice and talked me through some of the questions I've have for a long time and inspired me to continue with renewed focus. I found this book to be a real page turner and delight to read- not a plod like a lot of books on Buddhism tend to be.

Author Marshall Glickmn details the difficulties and discomforts (even suffering a'traditional' clubbing from a Zen Master in the process) during the decades he spenttrying different Buddhist meditative techniques, looking for the most effectivemethod to transcend his ego. His excellent book about Vipassana Meditation,"Beyond the Breath", (no clubbing in that technique) was the result of his search.Glickman thinks Vipassana is likely closest to the style of meditation practicedby the Buddha himself. The author takes us on a very intellectually accessabletour of Buddhist and related Western philosophical thought, including showing howmodern science supports what the Buddha taught about people and the Universethousands of years ago. Buddha was searching for the source of human suffering anda way to find relief from it. Glickman tells us what answers Buddha found and howVipassana Meditation can have a relieving effect on our own sufferings today."Beyond the Breath" is one of those books you regret having to put down.I think you will very much enjoy reading it, and through it meeting a very eruditeand likable author. Now that I have read his book, I have no excuse for not committing to practicingthe technique, though it may even take a little Zen clubbing to get me going. From my reading, Marshall Glickman is very understanding about such very humanproblems and his book includes lots of helpful advice about getting started.Ted KavanauFounding President, CNN Headline News

I have read several books by S.N. Geonka and his followers, but none really gave me insights into the actual technique. It is explained in detail here. I understood it,applied it in my practice and it has definitely given me new insights into this particular style of Vipassanna meditation. It was intense, a lot of emotions materialized and my sensitivity to bodily sensations is makedly increased. I've have been practicing "noting" as well as "just sitting" for a while. Both techniques have been effective also, but this Vipassana technique is more refined. The book stated a strong case for practicing the precepts of Buddhism in addition to just meditation. The explanation and tie in to the laws of attraction and Kharma were very clear and well thought out.Any one interested in Vipassana should try this book. Anyone interested in integrating meditation and Buddhism into their lives, but have yet to make the jump, should also try it.

This book is an excellent, detailed, and clearly written overview as I prepare for a 10-day (Goenka) Vipassana retreat.

American Youth: A NovelBy Phil LaMarche

American Youth is a controlled, essential, and powerful tale of a teenager in southern New England who is confronted by a terrible moral dilemma following a fatal firearms accident in his home. This tragedy earns him the unwelcome admiration of a sinister group of boys at his school and a girl associated with them. Set in a town riven by social and ideological tensions – an old rural culture in conflict with newcomers – this is a classic portrait of a young man struggling with the idea of identity and responsibility in an America ill at ease with itself.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In telling the story of New England ninth grader Ted LeClare, LaMarche takes Mitch Albom–like sincerity, holds it arm's length from George Saunders–like deadpan satire, and transports the lot to a gun-crazy America that he refuses to judge. The results make his characters unwittingly sophisticated vessels for the hopes and fears of the post-post-Columbine exurbs. The plot is simple: while showing off his .22, Ted loads the gun; while Ted's back is turned, his schoolmate Kevin Dennison accidentally kills Kevin's younger brother, Bobby. The aftermath includes Ted's being taken up by a group of boys calling themselves the American Youth, teens who spout a debased, quasireligious, gun rights, antidevelopment, NIMBY-like parody of conservative talk show rhetoric. Ted also, at his mother's direction (his father is absent), lies about having loaded the gun. As Ted (referred to as "the boy" most of the time) comes around to telling the truth about what happened, there are detours into bad behavior with the Youth. In vivid set pieces, aimless teens take vigilante action against creeping cookie-cutter housing and enforce a bizarre set of double-standards. Drugs, alcohol and sex fascinate and repel the Youth in equal measure. LaMarche deftly allows his debut to be at once a parable and a dead-on rendering of its time and place. (Apr.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–Ted LeClare, a New England ninth grader, is showing off his father's guns when he hands one to visiting brothers. While he is in another room, one accidentally shoots and kills the other. Ted's terrified mother tells him not to tell the authorities that he loaded the gun. When Ted, who is referred to as the boy throughout the novel, returns to school after this violent incident, he is rejected by most classmates but is befriended by a group who call themselves American Youth. Their interests lie in vandalizing houses in the new subdivisions that are taking over the countryside. The Youth embrace gun rights, vigilante acts, and their own brand of religion that helps them rationalize their activities. As Ted begins to see the Youth for what they really are, he finally tells the truth about loading the gun and begins to feel release from his own guilt and pain. This novel is a harrowing but unsentimental look at Ted's world–an impersonal place of encroaching subdivisions and pressures to fit in, and where young people are caught between absurd double standards. The account is honest and perceptive, and readers will find themselves hoping that Ted will rise up through his anger and sadness as he wrestles with his personal dilemma of whether or not to tell the truth at great cost to himself and his family.–Susanne Bardelson, Kitsap Regional Library, WA

From Bookmarks Magazine
"There exists, of course, no more defining American image than death by bullet," notes the Los Angeles Times. In his debut novel, Phil LaMarche ties this all-too-common image to timeless themes (coming of age, class struggle) as well as more contemporary ones (violence in children, gun control, fascism). What results is a gripping narrative that says as much about the incongruities of 21st-century America as it does about one boy thrown prematurely into the maelstrom of adult life. Despite a few flaws—some academic dialogue attributed to teens, some cardboard characters, and the practice of referring to Teddy and his family as "the boy," the father," and "the mother"—LaMarche has delivered a powerful, emotionally devastating novel.
